PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh closed out its fall season on Saturday at the Frostbite Regatta on the Schuylkill River and the Mountain Hawks day was highlighted by first place finishes from the women’s varsity 8 and women’s freshman/novice 8. The Mountain Hawks varsity 8 raced to an open water finish time of 7:12.46, 16 seconds faster than the second place entry, Binghamton. Lehigh also defeated St. Mary’s, Loyola and Oswego, each by at least 36 seconds. In the freshman/novice 8 race, Lehigh posted a 7:49.3 over crews from Drexel, St. Josephs, Penn State, Temple and Lafayette.
Also on the women’s side, the lightweight 4 crew placed second with a time of 8:44.20 as it defeated entries from Temple, St. Mary’s, and Loyola. The second varsity 8 took fourth against strong crews from Temple, St. Josephs and Drexel.
“Despite the weather, Lehigh had a bright day at the Frostbite,” explained Director of Rowing, Liz Meltzer. “It was great to have so many of our student-athletes get a chance see their hard work pay off at the season finale. 18 out of 69 Lehigh rowers left with a first place medal while 54 of our athletes placed within the top three in their respective events. It’s clear that the depth is there, now, we need to continue to develop as we prepare for the championship spring sprint season.”
The men’s varsity 8 crew bested Penn State, Lafayette, and SUNY Maritime as the Mountain Hawks place third with a time of 6:24.16. Lehigh had to overcome a rudder malfunction during the race, but fought through the adversity to capture a top-three finish. The men’s freshman/novice 4 crew finished second in its race, with a time of 8:09.51, besting Loyola, Stony Brook, Philadelphia University and Binghamton. The men’s freshman/novice 8 battled for a win with a strong Delaware crew and ended up taking second place over crews from Binghamton, UMBC, St. Mary’s and Stony Brook
In the men’s JV Eight race, Lehigh placed fourth crossing in a time of 6:20.66, while the men’s lightweight crew finished sixth.
Lehigh will now shift into its winter training mode, highlighted by a training trip to Austin, Texas in January and the South Mountain Erg Sprints on February 28th, 2009.
