Rowing is a low impact sport utilizing all major muscle groups. The benefits of rowing span well beyond the realm of many other aerobic activities such as biking and running due to the use of not only the legs but the arms, back and abdominal muscles as well. The range of motion necessary for a good stroke also lends itself to improved flexibility. Research has shown that rowing burns calories faster than biking at the same perceived level of exertion. Due to the nature of the sport, rowing is a life long activity with many former collegiate rowers continuing to compete in masters divisions across the country.
