BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh Director of Rowing Liz Meltzer has announced the hiring of Andrew Schneider as the program’s assistant coach. Schneider comes to Bethlehem following a stint at Kent School in Connecticut where he served as the Boys Assistant Rowing Coach as well as an English teacher and the Assistant Director of Admissions. “I am really excited to add Andy to the Lehigh Rowing Staff,” explained Meltzer. “His competitive experience at Rutgers plus his experience at the Kent School as an educator make him a great fit for Lehigh. I look forward to seeing Andy develop the freshmen crews and assist on the varsity level.”
During his coaching career, Schneider led the Kent School Boys Third Eight crew to four Grand Finals appearances at the NEIRA Championships in four years, and they won the gold medal in 2006 and a silver medal in 2008. As the Varsity Eight assistant in 2006, Schneider mentored Kent School to the 2006 First Boat Championship as well as the overall team championship.
As an undergrad, Schneider was a coxswain at Rutgers University where he was a member of the 2004 heavyweight team that was ranked tenth in the country. He received his undergrad degrees in English and Psychology in 2004 and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in English from Middlebury College.
Schneider’s rowing accolades include winning a silver medal in the coxswain division at the 2004 CRASH B Indoor Rowing Championship and earning a pair of bronze medals at the Head of the Charles Regatta, coxing for the Palm Beach Rowing Association in the masters eight boat. As a student at Kent School, Schneider coxed his crews to a trio of state championships.
Schneider taught tenth and eleventh grade English, ESL Literature and Third Form Seminar at the Kent School and also coached cross country, basketball, soccer, ice hockey and swimming. As the Assistant Director of Admissions, he interviewed prospective students, evaluated applications of prospective students and traveled to Admissions fairs throughout the country promoting the school.
