Lehigh heads to Brown on Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh will play the Brown University Bears this Saturday afternoon at Meister-Kavan Field in Providence R.I. in what will be Brown’s season opener. This will be the first-ever meeting between the schools in men’s lacrosse. The game is slated to start at 2:00.

Brown went 7-7-0 last season and has five starters and 25 lettermen returning this season. The team is led by senior tri-captains Brian Asher, Jeff Hall and Brian Sharnick. Last season, Asher scored a total of four points and collected 32 ground balls, Hall scored a total of four points as well and collected ten ground balls, while Sharnick, collected ten ground balls.

As for the Mountain Hawks, this will be their second of three consecutive road games that will start off the season. Their first home game will not be until March 1st when they play Patriot League foe Holy Cross at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

Last weekend the Mountain Hawks beat Saint Joseph’s 7-5 in their season opener at Finnesey Field in Philadelphia. It was the first victory for new head coach Kevin Cassese and Lehigh’s first season opening win since 2003. Senior goalkeeper Eric Spirko made ten saves to earn the victory, while junior Matthew Diehl led the way on offense, scoring three goals.

On Monday, Spirko was honored by the Patriot League with an honorable mention accolade following his performance in the win over Saint Joseph’s. Spirko kept the Hawks off the scoreboard for the game’s final ten minutes and allowed just two goals in the entire second half.
