BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Ricky Cornetta had a stellar senior season in which he ranked among the nation’s leaders in goals with 29 and assists with 25. Cornetta was rewarded for his play with a First-Team selection to the All-Patriot League teams, but the recognition did not stop there, as Terry Foy’s blog on Inside Lacrosse listed Cornetta as the number-one most underrated played for the 2009 season. Cornetta was joined on the top-five list by student-athletes from Ohio State, Maryland, Notre Dame, and Penn State.
In his blog Foy says that Cornetta “did not get the spotlight his numbers deserved this season.” The New York native developed into one of the top scoring attackmen in the nation this season, ranking tenth in America in points per game. He also ranked in the top-ten of the Patriot League in goals-per-game, assists-per-game and points-per-game and led the Mountain Hawks with in goals, assists and points. Cornetta also scooped up 30 ground balls and caused four turnovers.
The senior earned Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors on March 23 after scoring 13 points in a pair of overtime road victories against nationally ranked teams the week prior. Cornetta dished out a career-high five assists to go along with a pair of goals in Lehigh’s 13-12 win at Army, and followed that performance up with a three-goal, three-assist performance in the Mountain Hawks 10-9 victory versus St. John’s. Cornetta assisted on the game-tying and game-winning goals against the Black Knights and he netted the game-tying goal with just one second to go in the win over the Red Storm. Cornetta finished his Lehigh career with 57 goals and 41 assists.
