The Lehigh Football program held its annual postseason banquet on Saturday evening at Iacocca Hall on Lehigh’s Mountaintop Campus to look back at the 2002 season and honor members of that team. Over 300 players, parents, alumni, friends, coaches and support staff were on hand for the event.
Several Lehigh program awards were handed out for individual accomplishments from the 2002 season in addition to the recognizing of certain players and coaches who received awards from national agencies.
Junior running back Jermaine Pugh was the recipient of the Archibald Johnson Cup given to the most valuable player in the Lehigh program. Pugh also was recognized with the team’s offensive back award after compiling a season in which he rushed for over 1,300 yards.
Senior captain Matt Salvaterra earned the James P. McConologue Award given to the player that is "all football." The strong safety played a key role in the secondary and on special teams, and also captured Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.
Junior defensive end Mike Gregorek was named the Alexander G. Hahalis award winner as the team’s best lineman, offensive or defensive. Senior center Jeff Santacroce took home the position award as offensive lineman, while the defensive line position award went to junior Joey Touzin. Santacroce was also recognized as an AFCA All-American.
Senior JB Henderson took home the program’s highest honor as he received the Scholar-Athlete award. Given to the student-athlete who best combines academics and athletics, Henderson boasts a 3.85 grade point average, and played a key role on the offensive line for much of the season.
The Barry Fetterman award, given to the player or players who best exemplify loyalty, dedication, and unselfishness was awarded to senior Ken Pitter. The cornerback battled back from injuries and was an important part of the Lehigh secondary, recording two interceptions and recovering a fumble.
Junior cornerback Lawrence Williams earned the defensive back award. Williams holds the Patriot League record for interceptions returned for a touchdown. Mike Taggart, another important component of the Lehigh defense, won the linebacker award. Both Williams and Taggart have one season remaining. Sophomore Tevor Micklos captured the special teams award, and senior Darin Henry garnered recognition as a receiver. Sophomore Anthony Graziani and freshman Shawn Strickland were recognized for their efforts on the scout team.
Junior linebacker Tom McGeoy, a First Team All-League selection, received the John C. Whitehead "Big LU" award given to the player that combines leadership and performance. McGeoy was instrumental in the team’s success, leading the squad with 65 solo tackles in 2002.
The Lehigh football banquet was made possible by the Lehigh Athletics Partnership program, whose mission is to promote interest in Lehigh Athletics, to encourage and provide financial support to the program and to enhance relations with all former participants, fans, friends, and parents of Lehigh student-athletes.
