Three Mountain Hawks receive All-League honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh’s baseball team placed three players on the All-League list it was announced by the Patriot League on Tuesday afternoon. Junior shortstop Liam O’Connor was the Mountain Hawks lone First-Team All-League selection, while senior outfielder Nick Bet and junior outfielder Joe Ercolano each earned spots on the Second-Team. Ties in voting led to 14 players being named to each team with O’Connor being one of two shortstops on the First-Team.

O’Connor had a standout junior season, batting a career-best .342. O’Connor was named Patriot League Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks in March. In the Mountain Hawks’ doubleheader vs. NJIT in South Orange, N.J. on March 25, O’Connor was a perfect 8-for-8 from the plate with one double, two RBI and three runs. He set new single season highs in runs (35), hits (52), doubles (11) and RBI (23). This is O’Connor’s second all-league selection. Last season, he was named to the Second-Team.

Key figures in the Mountain Hawk outfield, Bet and Ercolano started all 44 games this season. With three triples on the season, Bet finished his career ranked second on Lehigh’s all-time triples list with ten. Offensively, he ended the season with a .307 overall batting average, hitting .356 in league play. He registered 50 hits on the season—11 of which were doubles. He was one of four Mountain Hawks to blast multiple home runs, with one coming in Lehigh’s season-opener at Delaware State. In 2007, Bet led Lehigh in RBI (34), triples, total bases (73) and at bats (163), while co-leading with O’Connor in doubles.

Ercolano earned his second all-league selection after receiving First-Team All-League honors as a freshman. He led the team in runs for the second-straight season by scoring 36. Ercolano was 13-for-14 in stolen bases, including a seven-game streak in which he stole one base. His 13 stolen bases tied with senior Stephen Salemme for most on the team. The Fairfield, Conn. native totaled ten doubles and two home runs. Ercolano also had 22 RBI, which matched his total from last season.
