McBride an All-American, proclaims CBF

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior catcher Matt McBride has been named an All-American by the College Baseball Foundation, it was announced Monday. The accolade is part of a lengthy list of honors for McBride, who earlier this month was named a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award (top collegiate Division I catcher) and a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace College Player of the Year Award (top player in Division I). The CBF All-American team was built based upon nominations from conference and university baseball contacts in sports information.

En route to helping to lead Lehigh to a share of the Patriot League regular season title, McBride captured the Patriot League regular season triple crown by pacing the league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in. To this point, McBride’s .417 batting average currently ranks among the national leaders, and his 57 RBIs so far are a new Lehigh single season record. McBride’s 85 hits also set a new benchmark in both the league and school annals. He currently needs only five more hits to become just the second player in Lehigh baseball history with 200 career hits.

Defensively, McBride has gunned down 15 would-be base stealers, and he boasts a fielding percentage of .992. McBride has started in all 54 of Lehigh’s games this season.

The local product was instrumental in helping the Mountain Hawks win their first ever Patriot League tournament title on May 14. Lehigh will appear in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history later this week.

The College Baseball Foundation, based in Lubbock, Texas, was established in 2004 and is dedicated to preserving college baseball history and to recognizing standout teams and individuals who have influenced the collegiate game. The CBF will also hand out the Brooks Wallace Award in July.

The Mountain Hawks are seeded fourth in the Charlottesville (Va.) Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Lehigh will take on host and top-seed Virginia at 3:00 pm Friday afternoon in the first round of a double-elimination tournament. Second seed South Carolina and No. 3 Evansville round out the Charlottesville Regional.
