Geiger and Ercolano capture Patriot League accolades

Bethlehem, PA – For the third consecutive week, the Lehigh baseball program has been honored by the Patriot League. Junior designated hitter Matt Geiger has been named the league’s Player of the Week, and freshman center fielder Joe Ercolano has captured Rookie of the Week accolades, it was announced Monday. The awards, handed out by the league office, are inclusive of games played between March 21 and March 27.

In Lehigh’s three-game series at ACC power North Carolina State last weekend, Matt Geiger collected six hits in 11 at-bats – a whopping .545 average. Three of Geiger’s six hits in the series went for extra bases, and he scored twice and drove in four runs. During the series, Geiger registered a .818 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .615.

Geiger was not the only Lehigh player to have a terrific weekend at the plate offensively. Freshman Joe Ercolano was six-for-12 at the plate over the three-game set, hitting safely in all three contests. Ercolano walloped his second home run of the season on Saturday. For the weekend, he scored three times and drove in three. Ercolano’s slugging percentage was an impressive .833 for the weekend.

Although Lehigh came up short in all three contests, the Mountain Hawks gave the host Wolfpack all they could handle. Lehigh scored 17 runs in three contests, and out-hit the home team 34 to 32.

Lehigh (8-8-1) returns to the diamond on Tuesday, when the Mountain Hawks visit La Salle. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 from Philadelphia.
