Bucknell rolls past Lehigh in doubleheader sweep

In the opening contest, the Bison (15-9 overall, 6-2 Patriot League) used three first inning hits to jump on Lehigh starter Adam Marr, plating two early runs. Bucknell added a run in the fourth to go up three-nothing. Marr (2-3) left the game in a three-run hole, despite pitching five solid innings. He struck out five Bison batters without issuing a walk.
The Bison went up 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three times off Kyle Stawicki, who was unable to record an out.
In the top of the seventh, Lehigh got on the board when Jesse Novalis ripped a two-run, one out single to left field. However, the Mountain Hawks got no closer as Nathan Mittag closed the door to give his team and starter Phil Futrick (3-1) the victory.
Lehigh center fielder David Moscow continued to perform well at the plate, going 3-for-3 for the second consecutive afternoon. Overall, Lehigh pounded out seven hits in seven innings, but the Mountain Hawks stranded nine runners on base. Defensively, Lehigh struggled as well, committing an uncharacteristic three errors.
Game two started out on the right foot – albeit briefly – for Lehigh, as the Mountain Hawks plated a run in the top half of the first inning. However, Bucknell quickly had an answer, scoring three times off Lehigh starter Ryan Dodds (0-1) in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
The Mountain Hawks rallied to tie the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth, when senior shortstop Eric Hoffman ripped a two-run double to right field. Again, though, the Bison responded. This time, Bucknell scored five times in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach.
In the second game, the Mountain Hawks managed to score seven times on just seven hits in the nine inning affair – thanks in large part to five Bucknell errors in the contest. Again, the Mountain Hawks had opportunities to bring the score closer, but stranded runners aboard – ten in the game two setback.
Third baseman Jesse Novalis was 3-for-4 at the dish, compiling nearly half of the Lehigh hits in the game. No other Mountain Hawk amassed more than one.
Lehigh (15-13 overall, 2-6 Patriot League) returns to Goodman Field to host cross-town rival Moravian on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm EDT.
