Lehigh held its annual baseball luncheon recently at the Goosey Gander restaurant to recognize individual accomplishments and team success. Four Lehigh players captured awards on the afternoon as the team looked back at the 2003 regular season.
Junior third baseman Jesse Novalis captured the Athlete of the Year award for his stellar play all season. The Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the team member who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team. Novalis, the Patriot League’s Player of the Year, led the league in home runs, runs batted in, and walks, among other categories.
Senior captain Jeremy Mack earned the Scholar-Athlete award. The Scholar-Athlete Award goes to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete. Mack boasts a 3.5 GPA as an Earth & Environmental Sciences major. He led the league with five home runs against league opponents this season.
Senior captain Matt Yarnold won the Coaches Award. The Coaches Award is presented to the individual who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. Yarnold continued to work hard and battle, even after missing most of the season with a broken arm.
The final award handed out on the afternoon went to sophomore pitcher Jack Muscalus, who won the Anderson-Hartzell Pitching Award. Muscalus led the team with six victories, and posted an earned run average of 2.70. He was named the Patriot League’s Pitcher of the Week on four occasions.
