Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh was upended 5-1 by Pennsylvania Tuesday afternoon to fall to 16-20 on the season. With the victory Pennsylvania moves 20-14.
Penn got on the board in the third inning, as Coba Canales singled, then advanced home on an RBI single by Nick Italiano.
Lehigh was held in check, posting only one run, which came in the bottom of the fifth inning on an Eric Hoffman single. The Hoffman base-knock drove in Andrew Smith. Lehigh was unable to muster any further offense as the Quaker’s pitching staff scattered nine hits for the team’s 20th win of 2003.
Forrest Doane led the way for Lehigh at the plate, going 3-for-4. Eric Hoffman went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while John Zaszewski, Jeff Quiros, Jeff Baker and Andrew Smith added hits. Matt Mezzancello took the loss to fall to 0-1. Mezzancello allowed five hits and one run, however his bullpen coughed up four more runs.
Nick Italiano went 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI, Coba Canales went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and Andrew McCreary posted a 2-for-5 afternoon.
"We were unable to make the most of our chances today," said head coach Sean Leary. "We hit the ball well, but just couldn't pick up hits when we had runners in scoring position. That really hurt us."
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday at noon to face Navy in Patriot League action. The home contest will be Lehigh’s final series of the season. The Mountain Hawks home game with King’s on Wednesday has been cancelled.
