Bethlehem, PA – After a stellar week at the plate, Lehigh junior third baseman Jesse Novalis has been named both the Patriot League and ECAC Player of the Week. The awards, for the week ending April 20, recognize Novalis for establishing a new Lehigh home run record while hitting an astounding .652 over the course of six games last week.
At the plate, Novalis ripped 15 hits in 23 at bats to post the .652 average. He belted four home runs and hit three doubles on the week. The junior drove in 12 runs and scored ten more over the six games. He also drew four walks without striking out. On the basepaths, Novalis was a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
The first of Novalis’ four long balls on the week came in Thursday’s 22-12 thrashing of Maryland-Eastern Shore. That home run was the 20th of his career, surpassing Jeff Onorato ’85 as Lehigh’s all-time home runs leader. Novalis ends the week with nine blasts on the season thus far, leaving him just one short of tying Lehigh’s single season record of ten – a mark Novalis set in his sophomore campaign a year ago.
For the season, Novalis is hitting a team-best .362, with nine homers and 34 RBIs. He is also tops on the team with 28 runs scored (he scored ten times last week). He leads the Patriot League in a myriad of offensive categories so far this season, including hits, runs scored, RBIs, doubles, home runs, and total bases.
The Mountain Hawks (16-19 overall, 6-9 Patriot League) are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, when they host Penn in a 3:30 start at Goodman Field.
