Limeport, PA – Third baseman Jesse Novalis went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, but St. Joseph’s handed Lehigh its third straight setback as the Hawks defeated the Mountain Hawks by a 12-2 score at Limeport Stadium on Tuesday night. The win improves St. Joe’s record to 10-18 overall, while Lehigh falls to 13-17 following the loss.
The Hawks jumped all over Lehigh starter Ryan Dodds in the first inning, as St. Joe’s scored six times in their first at-bat, including a three-run homer from third baseman Willie Menke. They added four more runs in the seventh inning and two in the eighth to cruise to the ten-run victory.
Trailing 12-0, Lehigh got on the board in the bottom of the ninth when catcher Ross Abramsohn scored from third on a wild pitch. Moments later, Tino DeTore scored on another wild pitch to plate Lehigh’s only other run of the night.
Hawks pitcher Erik Holman (1-5) threw eight shutout innings to pick up his first win of the season. He fired over 150 pitches, striking out seven Lehigh batters. The Mountain Hawks had opportunities all night, stranding 16 runners on base and going 0-for-14 at the plate with runners in scoring position.
Matt Mezzancello pitched very effectively in relief for Lehigh. The sophomore scattered six hits over six innings of work, striking out six without allowing a run.
"We gave them a big lead to work with early," Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said following the game. "We had base runners, we had chances to get back in it, but couldn’t push any runs across."
Lehigh returns to action on Thursday, as the Mountain Hawks visit Maryland-Eastern Shore in a rescheduled doubleheader. First pitch is at noon from Princess Anne, Md.
