Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh dropped a doubleheader to Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Field, losing the first game 1-0 and the second 6-3. The losses drop Lehigh to 13-16 on the season and 4-7 in the Patriot League, while Bucknell improves to 17-8 overall and 9-3 in league play.
Game one saw a stellar performance from Lehigh starter Jack Lyons go for not. The freshman went seven strong innings, surrendering only four hits and a single earned run. That run would prove to be the difference in the game as the Bison pitching tandem of Zachery Allen and Phil Futrick combined to shut out the Mountain Hawks.
Bucknell scored its only run in the top of the second inning. Lyons walked Brian Hirschberg to lead off the inning. After being sacrificed to second base, he came home on a one out single by Pete Wolf.
Junior Jesse Novalis was 1-1 in the game with a pair of walks and a stolen base in the loss. Also picking up hits for Lehigh were junior Erik Hoffman, freshman Andrew Smith and sophomore Brian Cameron.
Lyons was the hard luck loser, falling to 2-4 on the season. With the win, Allen raised his mark to 4-1 with Futrick picking up his eighth save with a perfect seventh inning.
In game two, Lehigh took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when junior catcher Jeff Quiros knocked home freshman John Zaszewski with an RBI single. The lead would not last as the Bison tagged Lehigh starter Kyle Stawicki for two runs in the second and a pair in the fourth. The sophomore lasted only 3.1 innings, striking out five and allowing four earned runs. The Bison would add another run in the fourth off junior reliever Matt Nusinov.
Lehigh fought back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring twice despite only one hit in the rally, an RBI single off the bat of Hoffman. A Zaszewski foul out would bring home the Mountain Hawks final run of the afternoon, plating freshman Mike Sandonato.
Hoffman was two 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI. Bucknell shortstop Ben Stoll went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored. BJ Batterson went 2-for-3 in the win with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
Stawicki fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss. Kevin Burns picked up the win for Bucknell, moving to 4-1, while Matt Daley picked up his first save.
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday, when it hosts St. Joseph’s at 6:30 in a contest at Limeport Stadium in Limeport, Pennsylvania. The contest can be heard live on the Lehigh website at www.lehigh.edu.
