Bethlehem, PA – First baseman Forrest Doane went 4-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in as Lehigh snapped a five game skid with a convincing 12-3 victory over La Salle at Goodman Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks offense came to life, pounding out 15 hits in the win. Lehigh improves to 9-12 following the offensive explosion, while the Explorers drop to 6-12.
The Mountain Hawks didn’t need very long to get the bats going, as Lehigh posted a three-spot in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and two away, Doane reached on an infield hit, plating John Zaszewski with the game’s first run. Left fielder Tino DeTore then laced a single to center, allowing Jeremy Novalis and Jeff Baker to score and increasing the lead to three-nothing.
The Explorers got a run back in the second, when John Reifsnyder grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, plating a run.
Leading by a 3-1 score in the home half of the third, Lehigh increased the lead when Doane doubled to right field and scored on a Chris Postlewait single to left.
With his team holding a 6-3 advantage in the bottom of the seventh, center fielder Jeremy Mack belted his third homer of the season – a solo shot – over the batter’s eye in straightaway center field.
Lehigh spoiled any hopes of a La Salle comeback by adding five more runs in the bottom of the eighth to cruise to the 12-3 victory. Sophomore Karl Weimer (1-1) allowed three runs and struck out four over five innings to pick up the victory. Explorers’ starter Jarrod Ringer (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
Jesse Novalis went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored twice in the win. Jeff Baker, Chris Postlewait, and Jeremy Mack all had two hits apiece for Lehigh. Baker scored three times and Tino DeTore drove in three runs for the Mountain Hawks on the afternoon. Doane’s four hits led all batters on the day.
"Forrest really got going this afternoon," said Lehigh head coach Sean Leary following the win. "Hopefully this win will help get our guys back on track as we get ready for an important league series this weekend."
The Mountain Hawks are back in action Saturday, as Lehigh hosts Patriot League foe Army in a four-game series. The two teams will square off in doubleheaders at Goodman Field on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon each day.
