Mountain Hawks come up short at The Vet

Philadelphia, PA – Lehigh was unable to get on the scoreboard on Tuesday night, as the Mountain Hawks came up on the short end of a 4-0 score to Pennsylvania in the opening round of the 12th Annual Liberty Bell Classic at Veterans Stadium. The loss drops Lehigh to 8-8 on the season, while the victory – their sixth straight – improves the Quakers to 8-6.
Penn scored its first run in the bottom of the third, when Nate Moffie singled home Steve Glass, who had tripled with one out. After the run, Lehigh starter Jack Lyons (2-1) settled into a groove, setting down the next nine batters he faced.
However, the Quakers’ staff was also dominant on the mound, as four Penn pitchers combined to scatter seven Lehigh hits while keeping the potent Mountain Hawks offense off the scoreboard all night.
Clinging to a one-nothing lead in the bottom of the eighth, the Quakers put together three hits and plated three runs to secure the victory.
Both Jesse Novalis and Jeremy Mack paced Lehigh with two hits apiece. Moffie led the Quakers with two hits, a run, and an RBI.
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday, as the Mountain Hawks visit Temple. Game time is set for 3:00 from Philadelphia.
