Novalis homers as Lehigh tops Manhattan

Riverdale, NY – Lehigh returned to the win column with a 5-4 victory over Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon, improving the Mountain Hawks’ record to 6-5. The loss drops the Jaspers to 5-8 on the season.
Lehigh jumped out to a three-nothing lead with three runs in the top of the third inning. Two of the runs came on a single from third baseman Jesse Novalis, who finished the day with two hits and three RBI. Novalis’ other hit was a solo home run in the fifth, his second blast in as many days.
John Zaszewski went 3-for-4 for the Mountain Hawks, smacking two doubles. Left fielder Tino DeTore was 2-for-4, as was Jeff Quiros. Quiros also doubled and drove in a run. Jeff Baker closed out the Lehigh scoring with an RBI hit in the seventh, which proved to be the game-winning run.
Freshman Jack Lyons continued to pitch well for Lehigh. He improved to 2-0 on the season after a strong performance of 7.2 innings. He surrendered only one earned run, while striking out three. Sophomore Matt Mezzancello pitched the final inning and a third to notch his second save.
The Mountain Hawks are back in action Saturday for their home opener. Lehigh hosts Binghamton at Goodman Field in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
