Bradenton, FL – Sophomore Jack Muscalus allowed only two unearned runs over eight innings of work, and Lehigh scored eight runs in two innings as the Mountain Hawks cruised to an 8-2 win over St. Francis (NY) at the IMG Baseball Academy on Friday afternoon. With the win – Lehigh’s second straight – the Mountain Hawks improve their record to 4-4 on the season.
Lehigh broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth when Jeff Quiros singled home Jesse Novalis with the game’s first run. After Jeff Baker was hit by a pitch, first baseman Ross Abramsohn singled home a run to give Lehigh a two-nothing advantage. Later in the frame, with the bases loaded, designated hitter Brian Cameron drew a free pass, allowing Quiros to score.
Down by three runs in the top of the seventh, the Terriers refused to give in. With two outs and nobody on, St. Francis mounted a rally to plate two unearned runs on an Anthony Guidice single.
However, the Terriers could get no closer. The Mountain Hawks blew the game open with a five-spot in the bottom of the seventh. Shortstop Eric Hoffman led off the frame with a double, and he would later score on a Jeremy Mack squeeze bunt. Jeff Baker later doubled in a pair of runs to seal the win.
Muscalus (2-0) had another strong outing on the mound, pitching eight innings and allowing only two unearned runs. He scattered eight hits, walked two, and struck out five in the victory. Freshman Kyle Collina pitched a perfect ninth and struck out a batter to close the door on St. Francis.
