Annapolis, MD – After beating its archrival Lafayette for the fifth time this season in the elimination game, Lehigh fell to Navy 5-3 in the first game of the three game series that will decide the League championship.
Lehigh led through the first six and a half innings and was ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh before the Midshipmen plated three runs to take a 5-3 lead. Freshman Rookie of the Year Jack Muscalus pitched the first six innings but did not start the seventh. Freshman Matt Mezzancello picked up the loss for Lehigh as he allowed all three runs in the seventh. Freshman Ryan Dodds pitched the last two innings for the Brown and White.
Sophomore Eric Hoffman went 2-for-4 against Navy and eclipsed the 70 hit mark extending his school record for hits. Senior Jeff Pietrak hit a solo homerun in the top of the second inning and Justin Pagan recorded Lehigh’s only other RBI. Chad Thoman and Jeff Quiros each recorded a hit in the losing effort.
Game two of the series, originally scheduled for noon on Sunday, has been moved up to 11:00 AM due to the threat of rain in the area. That game, along with game three if necessary, will be broadcast live on the Lehigh web site at www.lehigh.edu.
