Annapolis, MD – The 2002 Lehigh team continued its assault on the record books as the Mountain Hawks split a doubleheader with Navy at Max Bishop Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks won the opener 4-2 behind the arm of senior Dave Cerminaro, but fell short in the second contest, 4-3. The game one win was Lehigh’s 24th victory of the season, surpassing the school mark for wins in a year, formerly held by the 1995 team which won 23 games. Cerminaro’s complete game "W" in game one also ties a Lehigh record for wins by a pitcher in a season (7), previously accomplished four times.
Cerminaro was dominant in the opener, going the distance scattering two runs and five hits. At one point, he set down 15 straight Midshipmen hitters. The senior struck out five and did not walk a batter, improving his record to 7-3 on the season.
Tied at 2-2 heading into the seventh, the Lehigh offense got to work, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring twice. Shortstop Anthony Piccola’s RBI single proved to be the difference, as the Mountain Hawks won 4-2. Center fielder Justin Pagan and designated hitter Chad Thoman each collected two hits in the victory.
Game two started out in a promising fashion for Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks used an RBI double from right fielder Jeremy Mack, two walks, and a two-run Chad Thoman single to build a 3-0 lead in the first inning. However, Navy mounted a comeback over the next several innings, and took the one run lead in the bottom of the fifth. Lehigh had several opportunities, but could not tie the score. The Mountain Hawks left five runners on base in game two.
Lehigh ends the day with a record of 24-17-1 overall and 9-5 in Patriot League play. The Midshipmen are 18-23 overall and 11-7 in the league following the split. The two teams are scheduled to square off in another doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday in Annapolis. Freshman Jack Muscalus will start the first game for Lehigh, and he has a chance to tie Cerminaro and the others for the Lehigh record for wins in a season. Muscalus is currently 6-2 overall and 3-0 in Patriot League starts.
