Pagan powers Lehigh past Bison

Lewisburg, PA – Lehigh swept Bucknell on Sunday afternoon to take three of four games in a Patriot League series from the Bison. The Mountain Hawks won the first game 7-5 and took the second 9-6 in nine innings. Lehigh is now 19-13-1 overall and 5-3 in the league. Bucknell fell to 14-25 overall and 5-7 in the league.
Freshman Jack Muscalus pitched five and two thirds innings for Lehigh in game one to pick up the win. Now 2-0 in Patriot League outings, Musculus allowed five earned runs, all of which came in the bottom of the third inning. Lehigh trailed 5-1 after the third but put up a four spot in the top of the fourth to tie the game. A run in the sixth gave Lehigh a 6-5 lead and Matt Nusinov relieved Muscalus in the sixth to pick up his third save of the season.
The top half of the lineup continued to tear up the Bison pitching as Lehigh’s first four hitters combine for 11 of the 15 Mountain Hawks hits. Sophomore Eric Hoffman went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Senior Justin Pagan had three hits including a homerun. Pagan also knocked in a pair and scored two. Jesse Novalis went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Jeremy Mack was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Pagan, Novalis, and Jeff Pietrak provided the offense in game two. The trio combined for 10 of Lehigh’s 13 hits. Pagan hit a pair of doubles and knocked in three finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Novalis went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored and Pietrak finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a two runs scored. Lehigh used a three run ninth to break a 6-6 tie and win game two.
"Johnny Whole-Staff" pitched game two for the Mountain Hawks as head coach Sean Leary used seven pitchers in the game. Pietrak started the game but allowed three runs in the second inning and left with the score tied at 3. Matt Nusinov came away with the win to improve to 1-1 overall on the season. Nusinov pitched two innings allowing just three hits while striking out two. Nusinov pitched one and a third in game one. Haveri picked up his first collegiate save of the season pitching one inning and fanning two.
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Delaware State at 3:00.
