Lehigh splits with Army in league opener

West Point, NY – Lehigh opened Patriot League play by splitting a doubleheader at Army. The Mountain Hawks won game one by a 3-1 score, but lost the second game, 5-1. Senior hurlers Dave Cerminaro and Brian Andalman each pitched complete games for the Mountain Hawks. The game one win snapped a four game Lehigh losing streak. The Mountain Hawks now stand at 13-11-1 on the season, and 1-1 in league play. The Black Knights are 7-12 overall, and 2-4 in Patriot League games.
In the first game, Dave Cerminaro (5-2) notched his team-leading fifth win of the season, as he pitched a complete game five-hitter. The right-hander allowed only one run, while striking out three and not surrendering a walk. At the plate third baseman Jesse Novalis hit two doubles and scored the game-winning run on a first inning Jeremy Mack single. Center fielder Justin Pagan also collected two hits for Lehigh. Second baseman Eric Hoffman was 0-for-4 at the plate, halting his league-record hitting streak at 28 games.
Game two saw the Black Knights take advantage of two Lehigh errors as Army earned the doubleheader split with a 5-1 win. Army scored three times in the third, and two more in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Offensively, Lehigh could muster only four hits in the game. Southpaw Brian Andalman (2-3) pitched a complete game for Lehigh, scattering four hits in six innings of work in suffering the tough defeat.
Lehigh and Army hit the diamond once again on Sunday, squaring off in games three and four of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 EDT from Doubleday Field, and all the action can be heard live on the Lehigh web site at www.lehigh.edu.
