East Hartford, CT – Sophomore second baseman Eric Hoffman extended his hitting streak to 27 games, tying a Patriot League record, but it wasn’t enough as Hartford captured a doubleheader from the Mountain Hawks on Saturday afternoon. Hoffman now finds himself tied with Bucknell’s Kevin Silverman atop the league’s all-time list. Silverman hit safely in 27 straight games for the Bison in 1995. The pair of losses on Saturday drops the Mountain Hawks record to 12-9-1, while the two victories improve the Hawks’ mark to 5-10 on the season.
In game one, the Hawks rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Lehigh, 4-3. Shortstop Anthony Piccola led Lehigh’s efforts at the plate; he was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double. Jeff Pietrak hit a solo home run, his second of the season. Jeremy Mack slapped a double in a 1-for-3 effort, one of eight Mountain Hawk hits in the game. On the mound, senior Dave Cerminaro went the distance, and was saddled with the loss. His record drops to 4-2 on the season.
In the second game, Hartford again rallied for a come-from-behind win. This time, it was two 3-run innings for the Hawks that led to the 7-3 win over Lehigh. All in all, the Hawks pounded out 13 hits in game two, while Lehigh mustered only three. Jeff Pietrak led the Mountain Hawks with 2 RBIs in the loss, while Piccola added his second two-bagger of the afternoon. Senior Brian Andalman took the ball to start game two, and he suffered the defeat. His record falls to 2-2.
After winning seven straight, the Mountain Hawks have lost their last three ball games. Lehigh looks to get back on track on Tuesday, when it visits Villanova. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 from Villanova, Pa.
