Philadelphia, PA – Lehigh’s seven game winning streak came to a halt on Wednesday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks lost to Temple 10-6 in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic at Veterans Stadium.
Lehigh (12-7-1) took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and maintained a lead until the top of the fourth when Temple (5-8) put a two-spot on the board to tie the game at three. The Owls scored one run in the second inning. The Brown and White quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth but Temple tied the game with a run in the fifth. The Mountain Hawks saw their last lead in the bottom of the six but quickly relinquished it in the top of the seventh giving up five runs. The Owls tacked on a run for good measure in the top of the ninth.
Despite the loss, sophomore second baseman Eric Hoffman extended his school record hitting streak to 25 games and continued his chase for the Patriot League record of 27 set by Kevin Silverman of Bucknell in 1995. Hoffman finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Sophomore Jesse Novalis went 2-5 on the afternoon with a homerun and a double while Jeremy Mack added a 2-for-4 performance in the losing effort.
Freshman Jack Muscalus suffered the loss for Lehigh allowing five runs in two and two thirds innings in relief of starter senior Jeff Pietrak. Pietrak, who was on a strict pitch count, left with the game tied at three after pitching four innings allowing just two earned runs.
Lehigh returns to action when it travels to Hartford on Saturday for a double dip scheduled to start at 12:00.
