Bethlehem, PA – For the second straight week, Lehigh second baseman Eric Hoffman has been named the Patriot League Player of the Week. In three games played between March 18-24, Hoffman hit .444 (4-for-9), with a double and a home run. He scored six times, and drew six walks. All told, the sophomore reached base 10 times in 15 plate appearances, as Lehigh won at Delaware State on Thursday, and swept a doubleheader at Pennsylvania on Saturday.
"Eric has been steady for us since day one," said head coach Sean Leary. "He has been a model of consistency at the top of our lineup, and a big factor in our success."
Hoffman has hit safely in all 19 games so far this season, and is sporting a school record 24-game hitting streak dating back to his freshman year. He hit his first career home run in his final at bat in game one of a doubleheader at Penn on Saturday to keep the streak alive. On the season, Hoffman leads the team with a .451 batting average. Defensively, the second basemen has committed only one miscue, and has a fielding percentage of .989.
The Mountain Hawks are 12-6-1 on the season, and are off to their best start since the 1984 team won 20 games and captured the East Coast Conference title. The 2002 Lehigh squad has won seven straight, and will return to the diamond on Wednesday, when it takes on Temple in the Liberty Bell Classic at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 from The Vet, and all the action will be broadcast live on the Lehigh web site at www.lehigh.edu with J.P. Matychak and Keith Yimoyines calling the action.
