Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh featured a potent offense and masterful pitching in a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Binghamton Bearcats on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh ran away with the opener, 9-1, and won the second game by a 6-1 score. The pair of wins pushes Lehigh’s record to 8-6-1 on the season, while the defeats drop Binghamton’s mark to 4-9 overall.
In the first game, Brian Andalman (1-1) picked up his first win of the season by pitching six scoreless innings and striking out five. Offensively, second baseman Eric Hoffman was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two runs batted in. Jeff Pietrak and Chad Thoman each added two hits for the Mountain Hawks, and shortstop Anthony Piccola was 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
In game two, Lehigh used the same formula as game one to grab another ‘W.’ This time, it was freshman Jack Muscalus pitching a gem on the mound. Muscalus (3-1) went the distance, allowing only one run. He didn’t walk a batter, and he recorded five strikeouts. At the plate, the Mountain Hawks exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lehigh used a couple of timely hits and two Bearcat errors to push across five runs in the frame. Binghamton made six errors in game two, leading to six unearned Mountain Hawks runs. Third baseman Jesse Novalis collected two hits in three trips to the plate for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks look for the series sweep when Lehigh hosts Binghamton in the third and final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for noon on Sunday.
