Homestead, FL – Duquesne put 12 runs on the board, and Lehigh was unable to mount a comeback, as the Dukes defeated the Mountain Hawks by a 12-4 score in the Homestead Challenge on Thursday afternoon. The win improves Duquesne’s record to 4-3 on the season, while the loss – Lehigh’s third straight – drops the Mountain Hawks to 4-4-1 so far in the 2002 campaign.
Lehigh senior Dave Cerminaro (2-1) suffered the defeat for the first time this season. Cerminaro pitched six innings for Lehigh, striking out three. He also walked one batter – the first free pass he has issued in 19 innings of work this season.
Junior Jeremy Mack led the Lehigh offense, coming up with two hits in four trips to the plate, and scoring a run. Sophomores Eric Hoffman and Jesse Novalis also added a hit and a run scored each in the loss.
Lehigh wraps up its stint at the Homestead Challenge with a pair of games on Friday. The Mountain Hawks will square off with Boston College for the second time this week in an early morning tilt. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 am, as Lehigh looks to avenge Wednesday night’s setback. Later on Friday afternoon, the Mountain Hawks will take on Adelphi before heading back to Bethlehem on Saturday.
