Lehigh Gets Big Win Against Marist

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh (14-22, 6-10) took on Marist College (25-12-1, 13-5) today in a non-conference game in which Lehigh was the victor by a score of 13-5. The Mountain Hawks defense was led by freshman pitcher Matt Nusinov (2-1) who went seven and one-third innings, gave up four earned runs, and struck out three. His stats do not tell the whole story, however, as he was able to get out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the top of the sixth inning.
On the offensive side of the game Lehigh dominated the Marist pitching staff. It started in the bottom of the second inning when freshman Eric Hoffman hit an RBI single into left field scoring senior Matt Andrews. Junior Jeff Pietrak added three runs to the board when he homered later in the inning. Lehigh continued its offensive surge in the fourth inning with RBI singles from Hoffman and freshman Jesse Novalis. Then senior Pat Hollander stepped up and belted a two-run homerun to right field. Hoffman brought his offensive attack into the fifth inning with another RBI single. In that same inning Pietrak had an RBI ground out and junior Chad Thoman contributed with an RBI single. The Mountain Hawks would score two more runs, one in the sixth and one in the eighth that put the nail in the coffin for Marist. Even though everyone contributed to the Lehigh offense today the big hitters were Hoffman who finished 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBI’s, Pietrak who went 1-for-4 with a run and four RBI’s, and junior Anthony Piccola who batted 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored.
Lehigh travels to Massachusetts this weekend to take on Holy Cross in a four game league series beginning Saturday at noon.
