Cerminaro and Novalis Lead Lehigh to Victory

Bethlehem, PA – In Patriot League action today Lehigh (13-20, 6-8) won the first game of a doubleheader with Bucknell in dramatic fashion by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to win 1-0, and dropped the nightcap by falling 7-6 in nine innings. The first game was a pitchers’ duel with junior Dave Cerminaro pitching seven scoreless innings, only giving up one hit, walking none, and striking out three. For Bucknell, Kevin McDowell went six and one-third innings giving up one run on three hits while striking out four. Lehigh received its run in the seventh off of an RBI single from freshman Jesse Novalis that scored freshman Eric Hoffman to give Lehigh the win. This was the first time that Bucknell has been shutout in 135 games.
The second game was much closer as both teams were tied at 2-2 after five innings. Bucknell put up another run in the top of the sixth and held that lead going into the bottom of the seventh when senior Pat Hollander began the inning with a leadoff walk. Sophomore Jeremy Mack then singled to right field that scored pinch runner Hoffman and tied the game sending it into extra innings. Bucknell managed to add two in the next inning but Lehigh was able to answer with RBI doubles from junior Justin Pagan and Novalis. In the ninth inning Bucknell increased its lead with a two run single by John DiBonaventura. The Mountain Hawks were only able to add a run off of an RBI groundout by freshman Jeff Quiros that scored Mack. Mack finished the game going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI’s. In a no-decision outing senior Ryan Parish went seven innings and struck out four.
These two teams meet up again tomorrow in more Patriot League play with a doubleheader beginning at noon at Lehigh.
