The Mountain Hawks lost the first game of their doubleheader 13-10 against Lafayette (7-18, 2-6), but came back to win the second one 15-10. The first saw Lehigh come back from a 2-1 deficit by putting five runs on the board in the top of the third inning. This burst of offense was sparked by an RBI triple by junior Justin Pagan and a two RBI single by freshman Jesse Novalis. Novalis would come up big in the next inning also with a solo homerun. He finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI’s. However, Lafayette would go on to score seven runs in the bottom half of the fourth to increase its lead 10-7. Lehigh then made a run to tie the game at 10-10 in the top of the sixth off of a two RBI single by senior Pat Hollander. But Lafayette put up three more in the bottom of that inning to secure the victory. In the contest senior Josh Hillman (1-3) was credited with the loss.
The second game was an entirely different story for the Mountain Hawks. The team exploded in the first for seven runs on six hits. Leading the charge was Novalis with a two RBI double, sophomore Jeremy Mack who took the ball over the right field fence for a three-run homerun, and senior Rob Moran who belted a two-run shot only two at-bats later. Junior Chad Thoman led off the next inning with a bomb to straight away center. Over the next three innings Lehigh would put an additional seven runs on the board. By the end of the fifth inning Lafayette only had seven runs compared to Lehigh’s 15.
Although everyone on the squad was hitting that game the Mountain Hawks’ offense was guided by a 4-for-4 performance from Pagan and a 5-for-5 performance from Thoman. Mack also drove in four on two hits. Receiving the win for Lehigh was freshman C.J. Heim (1-0) who pitched four innings and struck out one.
Lehigh, now 9-15 overall and 3-5 in the Patriot League, will take on Delaware St. in a non-conference match up tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. This will be the teams’ third meeting after Delaware St. took two wins from the Mountain Hawks in the beginning of the season.
