Limeport, PA – In a battle of two schools located just five minutes apart, Lehigh prevailed with a 9-6 victory over Moravian on Tuesday afternoon at Limeport Stadium. Lehigh used 14 hits including a pair of homeruns by Anthony Piccola and Jeff Quiros to pick up its seventh win of the season.
Moravian (7-14) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning as CJ Heim struggled on the mound. It was Heim’s first outing since suffering a concussion last Wednesday against St. Joseph’s and it was evident he was not prepared to return. The Greyhounds tacked on another run in the top of the third inning to make it 5-0 when Bob Frey doubled to left and Charlie Bowden singled him home on the next at bat.
Lehigh (7-13) quickly recovered however tying the game in the bottom half of the third. An RBI single by Quiros started the inning and Lehigh took advantage of a Moravian miscue on a bunt single to score two more runs. Matt Andrews doubled and Rob Moran knocked in two with a triple to the right field fence.
Moravian took the lead again in the top of the fourth when Matthew Turtell singled home Michael Abbate who led the inning off with a walk. Lehigh countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning however powered by a two run homer by Quiros and an RBI single by Jesse Novalis. The Mountain Hawks tacked on their ninth and final run on Piccola’s solo homer that came in the bottom of the eighth.
Novalis finished the game 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk while Quiros finished 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Matt Andrews chipped in with a 3-for-4 performance that included a double and a run scored and Jeff Pietrak added a pair of hits and RBIs to the win.
Ryan Parish picked up the win for the Mountain Hawks going 3.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three. Josh Hillman picked up the save throwing five shutout innings allowing just one hit.
Lehigh played without starting first baseman Pat Hollander and leadoff hitter Justin Pagan, who both suffered minor injuries, this past weekend. Hollander will be ready to play this weekend while Pagan is listed as probable. The Mountain Hawks were also missing some other key players, such as Eric Hoffman and Jeremy Mack, due to exams.
The Mountain Hawks return to action this weekend when they travel down the Route 22 to Easton to take on archrival Lafayette in a four game Patriot League series that begins on Saturday at noon.
