BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Cory Kent was an instrumental part in all three of Lehigh’s wins last week, and on Monday, the Patriot League recognized his accomplishments by naming him the Rookie of the Week. Kent recorded his first win and his first save on the same day, Wednesday, and followed that up with another win on Sunday to help the Mountain Hawks go 3-2 on the weekend.
Kent pitched the 10th and 11th innings in game one at UMES on Wednesday, giving up just one hit and not allowing a run as Lehigh emerged with the win, 8-7 in 11 innings. The freshman righty worked his way out of a bases loaded jam by inducing a 6-2-3 double play that kept the Mountain Hawks alive. When Logan Marshall-Winchester drove in the game-winning run in the 11th, Kent came back out to finish the game for his first career win.
Lehigh head coach Sean Leary called on Kent again just hours later in the final inning of game two. He faced three batters, striking out two and picking off a runner to record the last three outs to earn the save in a 6-3 win.
Kent earned his second career win when he pitched three innings in relief at George Washington on Sunday. The Mountain hawks prevailed in a wild, 10-9 shootout for their third win of the week. Kent gave up five runs in his three innings, but all were unearned and he was on the mound as the Mountain Hawks scored three-straight runs in the eighth inning to pull out the win.
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday in the first game of the team’s annual spring break trip to Florida. The Mountain Hawks take on Florida Atlantic at 6:30 p.m.
