BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League announced its weekly awards for baseball on Tuesday, and Lehigh freshman Billy Goldman was named the Rookie of the Week. In five games last week, the outfielder hit a team best .471, with six RBI. Three of those RBI came on a three-run homerun, the first of his career, in Lehigh’s 15-14 win over Air Force. The Narbeth, Pa. native was four-for-eight with runners in scoring position and five-for-five when leading off the inning.
This is the first career award for Goldman, who currently leads the Mountain Hawks with a .364 batting average and a league best 12 RBI. This is the second time this season a Lehigh player has earned an award, as Greg Angelo was named the Pitcher of the Week earlier this season.
Sophomore pitcher Rob Russell was also awarded with an honorable mention this week, for his performance in Lehigh’s 4-2 win over Notre Dame. The Doylestown, Pa. earned his first win of the year, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits in the Mountain Hawks first-ever win over the Irish. Russell forced the Notre Dame batters into 11 groundouts, including three crucial double-plays that helped the Brown and White secure its fifth win of the year.
The Mountain Hawks, who have the highest scoring offense in the Patriot League, play games against Delaware State and Coppin State this week, before returning to Goodman Campus for their first home games of the season. George Washington visits Bethlehem for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. and one game Sunday at 12 p.m.
