BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women’s lacrosse team recently put the finishing touches on a productive fall season that included four competition dates as well as participation in a charity run to raise awareness in the fight against women’s cancers.  With high expectations for the upcoming season, head coach Jill Redfern scheduled a tough slate of fall competition to prepare the Mountain Hawks for what lies ahead.  The Brown and White took on the likes of Rutgers, Penn State, Saint Joseph’s, Monmouth, Hofstra, Drexel, archrival Lafayette and Johns Hopkins throughout the fall.

“We made solid progress throughout our fall schedule,” Redfern explained.  “Finishing up at Johns Hopkins was an excellent opportunity to gauge where we are, at this point in this young team’s development.  We are felling positive about what the future holds for this group as they played very hard and earned themselves quality results.”

Leading the way for Lehigh this season is junior Lauren Dykstra, a two-time All-League performer and 2009 All-Region selection.  Dykstra will be joined by senior Inneke Carmola, a three-time All-League selection, goal keeper Kelsy Ferris, a two-time All-League honoree and junior Allison Thomas, an All-League pick in each of her first two seasons.  Reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year Kelly Draper and 2009 All-League selection Leigh Ann Torcivia gives Redfern a plethora of talent for the 2010 campaign and was a driving force behind the tougher fall slate.

“The increase in the difficulty of our fall schedule is a step forward for our program.  We are anxious to see this new team take on a very competitive spring schedule.”  Among the competitors the Brown and White will see come springtime include Delaware, Saint Joseph’s, Penn State and Fairfield as well as the always challenging Patriot League foes.

Following two months of practices and fall competitions the Mountain Hawks now shift their focus to becoming stronger, faster and sharper with their skills.  “We begin a strength and speed segment this week.” Redfern explains.  “(Strength and conditioning coach) Eric (Markovcy)’s influence on the team is obvious.  We expect the ladies will put forward great effort with him in the yoga room to take another step forward in preparing for the demands of Division I lacrosse.”

The Mountain Hawks begin their 2010 season on February 20 when Mount St. Mary’s comes to the Ulrich Sports Complex.  The opening draw control is set for 1:00.
