Lehigh women sweep at home opener

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Lehigh hosted its first home race of the year on Saturday at the Steiner/Steinberg Boathouse and the Mountain Hawk women put on an impressive show with a first place boat in all four races. The varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and freshmen/novice four crews all crossed first in their respective races. On the men’s side, the second varsity eight took first in its race, while the varsity 8 and freshmen/novice 4 crossed second.
In the women’s races the varsity 8 finished in 17:30 to claim first place, while the second varsity 8 finished its race in 18:26 to also cross in first. The varsity 4 bested four other entries with a time of 19:33 and the freshmen/novice 4 crossed in 20:03, which was over three minutes faster than second place Iona.
The men’s second varsity 8 crew finished its race in 16:41 to defeat Franklin & Marshall, while the varsity 8 placed second behind Iona with a time of 15:22. The freshmen/novice race went to Iona’s entry with a time of 18:25, which was a single second faster than the second place Mountain Hawks and in the varsity four race Lehigh’s B crew finished in a time of 18:35.
Lehigh returns to action next weekend when the Mountain Hawks travel to Philadelphia to compete at the 2009 Navy Day Regatta.
