BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh University Athletics has named Jill Redfern its new head women’s lacrosse coach, it was announced on Monday.  Redfern takes over for Liz Brode Ota who stepped down from the position earlier this month.  Redfern has been the associate head coach of Lehigh’s women’s lacrosse program since 2006 and served as an assistant coach for the three years prior to that.  "I am thankful for the opportunity I have been afforded to lead the Lehigh Women's Lacrosse program,” Redfern explained.  “I am confident that the young women on this team are talented, driven, and dedicated to establishing a winning tradition.  It is an exciting time for our team and for me personally."

During her time as Associate Head Coach, Redfern has helped lead the Mountain Hawks to a pair of Patriot League Tournament appearances, and has mentored 13 All-Patriot League selections, three consecutive Rookie of the Year honorees and a pair of Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year award winners.

"Jill Redfern is the best candidate to lead our current team and the continuity she brings helps to ensure that our recruiting process will not suffer this year,” Lehigh Goodman Dean of Athletics Joe Sterrett said.  “Jill has earned this opportunity through her years of loyal and effective service as an assistant and her successful experience as a head coach.  I'm pleased that she reconsidered her initial decision to not pursue this vacancy, and that she trusts our commitment that her family life, which is a major priority for Jill and her husband, is also a priority for us."

Redfern has enjoyed a very successful career in coaching, which includes a previous stint at Lafayete College where she garnered Patriot League Coach of the Year honors in 2000 after leading the Leopards to the league title.  Redfern also served as an assistant in both the field hockey and lacrosse programs at Lafayette for ten years before assuming the head coaching position.

During her playing days, Redfern was a two time Division III All-American at Ursinus College and earned the MVP award of the 1986 NCAA Tournament as she helped lead the Bears to a national championship.  Following her collegiate playing experience, Redfern was chosen as a member of the US National Lacrosse Team from 1987-1993, and capped off her international play as a member of the winning United States World Cup Team in 1993, in Edinboro, Scotland.

Redfern is a 1988 graduate of Ursinus College, and later earned her masters degree in Educational Leadership from Lehigh in 1991.  She was inducted into the Ursinus Hall of Fame in 1998 for her exceptional contributions to women’s athletics.

Lehigh will return nearly its entire roster for the 2009 season, including each of its program record six All-League honorees from a year ago.  The Mountain Hawks have qualified for each of the past two Patriot League Tournaments.
