Smith earns second straight Scholar Athlete honor

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior captain Christy Smith was named the 2008 Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday.  This marks the second consecutive year that Smith has earned this award and the third time in the last four years the women’s lacrosse program produced the winner.  Smith started all 17 games for the Mountain Hawks this season, scoring 22 goals and 26 points.  She added 45 ground balls and 27 draw controls.  In the classroom, Smith maintains a 3.89 grade point average as an industrial engineering major.

 

A two time All-League selection in lacrosse, Smith scored 88 goals during her career, and added 26 assists and 154 ground balls.  In 2008, Smith led the Mountain Hawks in ground balls, ranked fifth in draw controls, and sixth in points and goals.  The Pennsylvania native scored a season high three goals in a win over archrival Lafayette and found the back of the net two times in six other games.  Smith’s season high in ground balls was nine, which came versus Villanova, while her four draw controls against nationally ranked Vanderbilt was a season best.

 

A two sport standout at Lehigh, Smith was a three time All-Patriot League selection and two time All-Region honoree in field hockey.  The 2007 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, Smith scored 22 career goals on the field hockey field and earned an invitation to the prestigious NFHCA Senior All-Star Game this past season.

 

Smith is a multi year member of the Dean’s List, the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the NFHCA All-Academic Team.  In 2007, Smith was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team, while in 2008 she was named the Lehigh Athletic Department’s Graduating Scholar Athlete award winner, the highest honor given out by the department.
