Lehigh falls in rubber match against Colonials

“Starting pitching can really give a team momentum early on in the game,” said Lehigh head coach Sean Leary, “and their pitching was great in the first, while ours struggled. On a cold day like this it’s really tough to comeback when you get down early.”
The Colonials started the scoring early, picking up four runs in the top of the first. Andrew Berger loaded the bases when he hit designated hitter Curtis Eward, and the next batter Andrew Abokhair unloaded them with a three-run double to left field. George Washington added one more run on a single up the middle by Doug Eizen, taking a commanding 4-0 lead after the first.
George Washington added four more runs in the top of the fourth before Lehigh got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Brendan McGaheran started the inning with a single through shortstop and third base, breaking up Cantrell’s no-hit attempt. McGaheran moved over to third after a single by Andy Russell and scored on a groundout to first base by Logan Marshall
Pitching dominated the game the rest of the way, as Lehigh’s bullpen combination of Andrew Grim, Ken Longernecker and Jim McConlogue allowed just four hits in their 5.1 innings of work. Choudry Faizan and Jimmy Duggan did not allow any base runners in their two innings of relief for the Colonials.
Berger (2-3) earned the loss for Lehigh, pitching the game’s first 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out three.
