“It was definitely an upset, and I’m pleased with the way my guys wrestled tonight,” said Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel. “Even the guys who got beat were in the hunt in every one of those matches. That was pretty impressive.”
The dual began at 149, with Lehigh building an early 6-0 lead on decisions from junior Trevor Chinn and senior Dave Nakasone. Chinn needed overtime to edge tough Navy freshman Bryce Saddoris 2-1 in the tiebreakers. Chinn rode out the first 30 second period and escaped in the second period to secure his team-best 18th win of the season. Nakasone converted a first period takedown and added one more at the final buzzer to defeat Joel Ahern 5-1 at 157.
The Mids earned their first points at 165, as Justin Jacobs secured a third period takedown and riding time to beat sophomore Mike Galante 5-3. Navy wrestled without returning All-American Matt Stolpinski, who is ranked eighth at 174. Freshman Alex Caruso took advantage of backup Jason Coyne, picking up four takedowns to earn the first bonus points of the night with a 10-2 major decision.
Navy answered with a major of its own, as Casey Caldwell’s takedown at the final buzzer gave him a 13-5 win over Kadeem Samuels at 184.
Lehigh and Navy then traded falls at 197 and 285, leaving the Mountain Hawks in front 16-13 after seven bouts. Sophomore Alex Iacocca nearly pinned Matt Parsons in the first period, but had to settle for four points. In the second, Iacocca was reversed, but answered by reversing Parsons onto his back and securing his first fall of the season in 4:01. Third ranked Ed Prendergast answered however, turning sophomore Justin Allen for a fall in 1:44.
The Midshipmen tied the dual at 16 with a win by Allan Stein in a wild match at 125. Stein had taken down freshman Mitch Berger three times by the middle of the second period. Berger however, tied the bout at six with a takedown at the second period buzzer, and was able to ride Stein for most of the third period, before Stein escaped late to earn a 7-6 win.
Ciasulli proved to be the hero for the Mountain Hawks on this night with his win over Baker, which avenged a 9-2 loss last year in
“I was really impressed with Ciasulli,” added Strobel. “That fall was really the difference in the dual.”
Needing a fall to tie the dual meet, Navy’s Glenn Shober could only muster a 5-3 decision over Jeff Santo at 141.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday when they head up to
