1/26/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Lehigh opened up its Saturday swing through New England with a 23-15 win over Harvard at the Malkin Athletic Center. Sophomore Seth Ciasulli and freshman Alex Caruso led the way with wins by major decision for the Brown and White, as Lehigh improves to 5-0 in the EIWA and 9-11 overall, while keeping the shorthanded Crimson winless on the dual season at 0-5.

The dual began at 125, where Harvard’s Dan Kelly put the Crimson in front with a first period pin of Mitch Berger. Ciasulli then put Lehigh on the scoreboard, totaling four takedowns, plus a reversal and two point near fall in the second period in a 13-3 major over Shay Warren. Harvard forfeited to senior Jeff Santo at 141, putting the Mountain Hawks up 10-6 after three bouts.

The featured bout of the morning was at 149 where No. 3 J.P. O’Connor met Lehigh’s junior Trevor Chinn, who leads the Mountain Hawks in wins. Despite some good shots from Chinn, O’Connor sandwiched first and third period takedowns around a second period reversal, and with riding time won by decision 7-2.

The Mountain Hawks took control of the dual by winning the next three bouts. Senior Dave Nakasone knocked off Bobby Latessa 6-2 at 157, and sophomore Mike Galante overcame an early takedown against to defeat Matt Button 6-4. Caruso then delivered much needed bonus points, racking up eight takedowns in a convincing 18-7 major of Patrick Ziemnik at 174.

Harvard was able to prevent Lehigh from clinching the dual by winning close bouts at 184 and 197. Fred Rowsey secured a late third period takedown to hold off freshman Kadeem Samuels 9-8. Jon Butler then followed with an 8-4 win over sophomore Alex Iacocca.

The Crimson needed a pin at heavyweight to win the dual, but sophomore Justin Allen built a riding time advantage in the second period which proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win over Andrew Knapp, which secured Lehigh’s tenth straight victory over Harvard.

The Mountain Hawks will wrap up their trek through New England with a match at Brown, Saturday at 6 p.m. in Providence, R.I. The match will be broadcast online at Lehighsports.com with streaming audio powered by Yahoo! Sports.
