Smith leads list of 11 honorees on Honor Roll

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Christy Smith was named the 2007 Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year on Friday. An industrial engineering major, Smith carries a 3.88 grade point average in the classroom and is a multi-year member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, as well as the Dean’s List. On the field, Smith is a two time All-Patriot League selection and an Academic All-District honoree. Smith becomes the second student-athlete to earn Scholar Athlete of the Year honors under head coach Liz Ota, and she joins Barrie Cominsky (2005), Elizabeth Brodbeck (1998) and Jill Altshuler (1995, 1996) on Lehigh’s list of women’s lacrosse Scholar Athletes of the Year.

A Second-Team All-League selection in women’s lacrosse, Smith started all 17 games for the Mountain Hawks in 2007, scoring 22 goals to go along with 11 assists. The Pennsylvania native also scooped up 31 ground balls, won 24 draw controls and scored four free position goals. Smith, who was also a Second-Team pick in 2006, has scored 66 goals and totaled 88 points in her three seasons for the Brown and White.

Smith also garnered First-Team All-Patriot League honors in field hockey following the 2006 season in which she led the Mountain Hawks with eight goals and 18 points. She is a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I National Academic Squad and she was honored as the women’s lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year for 2007.

Also on Friday, the Patriot League announced its 2007 Women’s Lacrosse Academic Honor Roll and Smith headlined Lehigh’s 11 selections. In all there were 72 student-athletes named to the women’s lacrosse honor roll. To be eligible for the honor roll, a student-athlete must obtain at least a 3.2 grade point average and be awarded a varsity letter in his/her sport.
