Smith named an Academic All-District selection

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Christy Smith was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II at-large second team, it was announced on Thursday.  A two-sport standout in field hockey and women’s lacrosse, Smith is a multi-year All-League selection in both sports as well as a member of the Dean’s List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.  The honor is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) whose schools are in the region. 

 

To be eligible for the award, individuals must be at least a sophomore, as well as a starter or key reserve on his/her team with a minimum grade point average of 3.20.  CoSIDA’s District II consists of schools in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. 

 

On the field, Smith garnered First-Team All-Patriot League honors in field hockey following the 2006 season in which she led the Mountain Hawks with eight goals and 18 points.  The engineering major tied for seventh in the Patriot League in goals, while her 79 shots were tops in the league.  Smith was also named a Second-Team All-Region selection in field hockey, and for her career she has scored 14 goals and handed out six assists.  Smith was a Second-Team All-League honoree in 2005.

 

A Second-Team All-League selection in women’s lacrosse, Smith started all 17 games for the Mountain Hawks in 2007, scoring 22 goals to go along with 11 assists.  The Pennsylvania native also scooped up 31 ground balls, won 24 draw controls and scored four free position goals.  Smith, who was also a Second-Team pick in 2006, has scored 66 goals and totaled 88 points in her three seasons for the Brown and White.

 

A multi-year member of both the Dean’s List and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Smith carries a 3.87 grade point average in the classroom as an industrial engineering major.  Smith is a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I National Academic Squad and she was honored as the women’s lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year for 2007.
