Lehigh drops doubleheader to Crusaders

Holy Cross’ Scott Hampe threw a no-hitter in the first game. Juniors Joe Eroclano and Liam O’Connor and freshman Dan Clauson were the only Mountain Hawks to reach base after Hampe walked Clauson twice and Eroclano and O’Connor each once.
The Crusaders put a pair of runs on the scoreboard in the first and sixth innings. Brendan Akashian hit a two-run double to left center in the first. Norm Roth made the score 3-0 when he scored off a wild pitch in the sixth inning, while Akashian scored off a single by Tim Hughes.
Junior Joe Matteo pitched all six innings and fanned six batters, but allowed four runs off four hits.
In the second game, the Crusaders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead by the end of the first. Akashian hit a two-run triple to right center and then scored off a Tyler Stampone single to right field.
Lehigh got on the scoreboard in the third inning when senior Net Bet doubled to left field and drove in O’Connor.
However, Holy Cross used another three-run inning, this time in the seventh, to distance itself from the Mountain Hawks and take a 6-1 advantage.
The Mountain Hawks began to chip away at the deficit in the eighth inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Matt Blake walked freshman Billy Swenson, which allowed Ercolano to score. Senior David Moscow hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored O’Connor, but that would be as close as Lehigh would get as the Mountain Hawks ended the inning with three runners stranded.
Freshman Greg Angelo picked up the loss. Angelo faced 31 batters in 6.2 innings, struck out three and allowed six runs off nine hits. Dan Seip earned his first win of the season after he allowed one run in 6.2 innings, while Kevin Beglane picked up the save.
Lehigh returns to action on Sunday to close out its four-game series with the Crusaders. Sunday’s doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon at Fitton Field.
