Mountain Hawks swept by Holy Cross on Sunday

WORCESTER, Mass. – The road remained unfriendly to Lehigh on Sunday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks dropped their final two games of a four-game series to Holy Cross at Fitton Field.  Lehigh fell 5-1 in the first game and then 5-4 in the second.  Until this weekend, the Mountain Hawks had not been swept in a four-game series since last season when Binghamton won all four on the Goodman Campus on the weekend of March 25.  Lehigh falls to 11-16-1 overall and 1-7 in the Patriot League, while Holy Cross improves to 6-14 and 4-4.

In the first game, Holy Cross scored all of its runs in the third inning with Norm Roth and Kyle Lister each drove in two runs.  Roth’s double to center field gave the Crusaders a 2-0 advantage and then Lister’s hit up the middle allowed Tyler Stampone and Roth to cross home plate.  Lister eventually tallied the final run of the inning when he scored off a Lehigh error.

Junior Liam O’Connor scored the Mountain Hawks’ only run of the game when he advanced home off a single by freshman Billy Swenson

Senior Joel Hockman picked up the loss after 2.2 innings of work.  Hockman fanned two batters, but allowed five runs off four hits.  Rob Oteri was awarded the win.  Oteri was on the mound for six innings, struck out four batters and allowed six hits and one run.

Lehigh’s offense struck first in the second game as the Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third when sophomore Michael Laychur scored off an O’Connor single.

However, Holy Cross came back in the bottom portion of the third inning with Matt Perry and Matt Perron each scored to make the score 2-1.

With O’Connor on base, senior Nick Bet doubled to right center that allowed O’Connor to score and even the game.  Lehigh regained the lead off an RBI single through the right side by freshman Mark Woleslagle.  The Mountain Hawks then increased their lead to two when sophomore Geoff Campbell’s double drove in Woleslagle and made the score 4-2.

Lehigh’s lead was short-lived as Jake Gorman hit a two-run single to left field in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at four.  The Crusaders took the lead for good in the seventh when Perry scored off a Perron single to left field.

Junior Andrew Grimm earned the loss after he allowed the game’s final three runs in 2.1 innings.  Tom Arrigg pitched 1.2 innings and allowed one run en route to earning his first win of the season.  Meanwhile, Mike Thater allowed no runs in the final two innings to pick up the save.

Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday night when the Mountain Hawks face archrival Lafayette in the finals of the Liberty Bell Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.  Game time is scheduled for 8:00 pm.  Live audio of the game will be broadcast online on lehighsports.com, with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports.  Jeff Tourial and Steven Lomangino will call the game.
