BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh rallied back from an early 4-0 deficit, but the Mountain Hawks were never able to take the lead, falling to Columbia 13-8 on Wednesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Freshman Inneke Carmola scored four goals for Lehigh, which falls to 6-8 with the loss, while the Lions improve to 5-8 as Holly Glynn netted four goals on the night.  Sara MacIntyre and Christy Smith both scored two goals for the Brown and White, while senior Vienna Pharaon dished out three assists.

“I thought that we made the little mistakes tonight, like not being able to transition the ball or not connecting on the attacking end,” head coach Liz Ota commented afterwards.  “We weren’t able to shift the momentum when we needed to, in terms of getting a goal when we needed it or causing a turnover.  Overall it was a good effort, but we just weren’t able to execute the way we would have wanted.”

Lehigh unleashed 23 shots on the evening, while Columbia was credited with 27.  Carmola led the Brown and White with ten shots, while MacIntyre got off five.  The Mountain Hawks scooped up 31 ground balls, led by Carmola’s six, while MacIntyre, Kara Chalanick, Seana Smith and Megan Stoner each picked up three.  Lehigh was 15-of-19 on clears, while the Lions were 15-of-16 and both teams committed 19 fouls.

Columbia jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first six minutes, but Lehigh came right back with four goals of its own, as MacIntyre, Christy Smith and Carmola combined for the four scores to tie the game at four with 10:47 left in the opening half.  The Lions would score two more times however before halftime to take a 6-4 lead into the intermission.

Holly Glynn scored the first goal of the second half to put the Lions in front by three, but Carmola netted her 38th goal of the season to bring the Mountain Hawks back to within two.  Glynn scored yet again to make the score 8-5 Columbia, but Christy Smith responded with her second score of the night to again make it a two-goal affair.  From there however, the Lions scored three straight times to take control at 11-5, but Lehigh refused to go away, as MacIntyre scored off of a feed from Pharaon with 8:47 left and the Mountain Hawks pulled to within five at 11-6.  Lehigh would score only once more from there however, when Carmola netted goal number-39 on the season with just 1:17 left on the clock.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday evening when the Mountain Hawks play host to league foe American in what is a huge game in terms of postseason implications.  Should Lehigh win that game, the Mountain Hawks will qualify for the 2007 Patriot League Tournament, but even if Lehigh were to lose, the Brown and White can still make the tournament, depending upon the outcome of the other games around the league that day.  Game time from the Ulrich Sports Complex is set for 5:00.
