PHILADELPHIA – Penn’s Matt Toffaletti hit a game-winning single to center field in the bottom of the tenth inning to score Kyle Armeny as the Mountain Hawks watched Penn sneak away with a 6-5 win at Meiklejohn Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.  Lehigh held a three-run lead midway through the eighth inning, but the Quakers rallied in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at five and force extra innings as neither team was able to score in the ninth.

For Penn, hits to center field were key in the second inning as Armeny started the bottom half of the inning with a solo homer to center field.  Alex Nwaka added a triple to center and then scored of a sacrifice fly that Toffaletti hit to center field as the Quakers led 2-0.

Lehigh, 11-23-1, responded in the third inning with a home run of its own.  Junior Joe Ercolano hit a two-run shot to right center to tie the game.

The game remained tied until the top of the seventh.  Senior David Moscow doubled to left center to lead off the inning.  Then with two outs, freshman Patrick Groome singled to center field that allowed Moscow to score the go-ahead run.

The Mountain Hawks added a pair in the eighth inning.  With junior Liam O’Connor on first and no outs, senior Nick Bet’s double to right center drove in O’Connor.  However, the play would not end there as Bet advanced to third on an error by the shortstop and then scored to give Lehigh a 5-2 advantage.  But Penn rallied in the bottom half of the inning and scored three runs to tie the game.

Penn’s offense came out strong in the bottom of the tenth with a pair of singles from Josh Corn and Armeny.  Corn would eventually be out at third base when Jim Farrell hit into a fielder’s choice.  Nwaka’s single to center field loaded the bases for Toffaletti’s game-winning single that scored Armeny.

Freshman relief pitcher Rob Russell earned the loss after he allowed the game-winning run.  Russell was on the mound for 2.0 innings, struck out one and allowed one run off eight hits.  William Gordon was awarded the win after he pitched two innings, allowed no hits and recorded one strikeout.

Lehigh returns to the diamond this weekend when it faces archrival Lafayette for a four-game series in Easton.  The first game of each doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon with the second game beginning approximately 30 minutes after the end of the first.
