EASTON, Pa. – Lehigh started its four-game series against archrival Lafayette with a win on Saturday afternoon at Class of 1978 Stadium, but the Leopards took the second game as the two teams split the doubleheader.  Behind solid offensive and defensive play, Lehigh blanked Lafayette 5-0 in the first game, but the Leopards prevailed in the second game 6-3.  Lehigh's record is now 12-24-1 overall and 2-12 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette is 22-13 on the season and 12-2 in league play.

Lehigh and Lafayette remained scoreless through three innings in the first game.  In the fourth inning, senior David Moscow loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch.  Freshman Dan Clauson then singled through the left side to drive in junior Liam O'Connor and senior Nick Bet as the Mountain Hawks took a 2-0 lead.

The Mountain Hawks added to their lead in the sixth when Bet scored off another single by Clauson.

Lehigh's offense continued to shine in the seventh inning.  With two outs, O'Connor hit an RBI-single to center field that scored junior Joe Ercolano.  O'Connor then gave Lehigh a 5-0 lead when he crossed home plate off a Bet triple to left center.  For Bet, it was his tenth-career triple, which is second all-time among Lehigh's career leaders.

For the win, junior Joe Matteo pitched all seven innings for his second complete game of the season.  Matteo faced 25 batters, struck out two and allowed four hits.  Ted Gjeldum picked up the loss after he allowed three runs off six hits in 5.2 innings of work.

The Mountain Hawk offense carried through to the second game in which Lehigh took a 1-0 lead in the first.  Senior Stephen Salemme and O'Connor recorded back-to-back singles and then Bet doubled to right center to score Salemme.

However, Lafayette started to comeback in the third with runs from Daniel Bierce and James Conrad to make the score 2-1.  Lafayette increased its lead in the fourth with a Chris Luick homer to right field, and then made it 4-1 in the fifth when Conrad scored off a single by Kevin Leasure.  The Leopards added a pair of runs in the seventh in order to increase their lead to five.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth inning, freshman Billy Swenson singled to third base that allowed Bet, who was 6-for-9 in Saturday's doubleheader, to score and make it a four-run game.  Lehigh would eventually trim the Leopards' lead down to three runs in the ninth when Ercolano scored from second off a single to right field by O'Connor.

Senior Joel Hockman picked up the loss after he allowed three runs off six hits in three innings.  Matt Kamine earned the win after recording three strikeouts and allowing two runs in 7.2 innings.

The Lehigh-Lafayette series resumes on Sunday with a doubleheader at Class of 1978 Stadium.  The first game is scheduled to start at noon, with the second beginning approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
