Lehigh upended by LaSalle 13-11 at home

“This is a heartbreaking game for us because in a lot of ways we should have been on the winning side,” explained third year head coach Liz Ota afterwards. “I thought Lissy just had an outstanding game for us and really did some great things out there today. We really wanted to neutralize number-20 (Emily Bonczek) because she is their big gun, but I think it may have taken us out of our game a bit.” Ota continued, “We competed out there though and gave a great effort. Coming off of a tough road game (at Stony Brook), I was happy with the way we rebounded today, and thought we really fought hard.”
The first half was filled with offense as Lehigh took a 9-8 lead into halftime. King netted four goals, including the first of the game at the 28:08 mark off of a feed from Vienna Pharaon. LaSalle tied the score at one with 26:37 remaining, but the Mountain Hawks went up 3-1 off of goals from Inneke Carmola and Sara MacIntyre. Catie Borneman brought the Explorers to within one at the 23:21 mark, but King netted back-to-back scores in a span of seven seconds, with both assists going to sophomore Tess McGrath, and Lehigh was in front 5-2 with 22:57 remaining.
Jill Davis scored next for LaSalle making the score 5-3, but King pushed Lehigh’s lead back to three at 6-3 with 14:32 to go. The Explorers scored the game’s next two goals to make the score 6-5, but MacIntyre and Carmola again netted consecutive scores, and the Mountain Hawks were back in front by three, at 8-5 with 5:48 to go. Tiffany Grossi then scored two straight scores to bring the visitors to within one at 8-7 at the 3:29 mark, but King netted her fourth goal of the half with 2:06 remaining, putting Lehigh in front 9-7. Stefany McKee scored the half’s final goal with 1:31 left on the clock, and the 17-goal first half came to an end.
In the second half, the scoring cooled down, but that did not stop Davis and King, as they netted the first two scores of the half in a span of 1:50 to make the score 10-9 Lehigh with 25:55 remaining. From there however, the Explorers scored the game’s next four goals to go in front 13-10 with 10:36 left. Neither team could find the back of the net again however, until King scored her seventh goal of the day with just 1:22 to go. The Mountain Hawks had several chances in their offensive side down the stretch, but hit the post with one shot, and could not get any closer.
Both teams unleashed 28 shots on the afternoon, while Lehigh scooped up 28 ground balls to the Explorers 23. Lehigh won 14 draw controls and LaSalle won 12, while the Mountain Hawks were 12-of-16 on clear attempts and the visitors were 8-of-9. Carmola scooped up a team-high six ground balls for Lehigh and won four draw controls, while sophomore captain Kyle Roth caused two turnovers and recorded three ground balls. Ferris sent back 11 shots for the game, while LaSalle goal keeper Chantelle McCormick stopped nine Lehigh shots.
