EAST STROUDSBURG,
Lehigh’s aspirations for a record-tying sixth straight team title were also dashed, as the Mountain Hawks sit in fifth place with 61 points. Cornell sits in first place with 112.5 points and the Big Red placed six wrestlers in Saturday’s finals.
“We’ve got to regroup for tomorrow,” explained Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel. “We have seven guys still alive. We need a good morning tomorrow to make sure we can get all seven guys still alive to nationals.”
The Mountain Hawks were done in by a 1-5 record in semifinal bouts.
“We really only lost two matches that we were supposed to win,” added Strobel. “The thing that hurts is that we lose those finals points.”
Freshman David Craig and senior Paul Weibel both lost to lower seeded wrestlers in the semifinals. Craig scored the first takedown versus Navy’s Antonio Miranda, but seemed to lose control of the match after getting penalized twice for stalling in the first period. Miranda turned the tables with two third period scores to win 8-5. Weibel was deadlocked 1-1 with Cornell’s Zach Hammond, but was unable to convert a single leg shot late in the third period.
Matt Ciasulli is the lone Mountain Hawk to escape this tournament unscathed. In the semifinals against Savino, Ciasulli used his legs to score a takedown and three point near fall to turn a close match into a 13-5 major decision. Ciasulli will meet Army freshman Matt Kyler in Saturday afternoon’s finals.
At 125, sophomore Matt Fisk looked to avenge a regular season loss to Penn’s Matt Eveleth, but fell 4-1. Eveleth scored a takedown in the first period and rode out. After a scoreless second period, Fisk chose top and tried desperately to turn Eveleth to no avail. A late reversal cemented the win for the Penn grappler.
Junior Dave Nakasone as also done in by late third period takedown, yielding a late score to lose 3-1 to Navy’s John Jarred at 157.
Senior Matt Cassidy also defeated in the semifinals, losing to No. 2 seed Josh Glenn of American 7-4.
In the consolations, senior Dave Helfrich and freshman Manuel Schubert were eliminated with losses; but freshman Seth Ciasulli knocked off a pair of seeded wrestlers to earn a top-six finish at 133. Ciasulli won identical 5-2 decisions over No. 8 seed Jeff Schell of Brown and No. 6 seed Matt Delorenzo of Columbia to place in what is widely regarded as the EIWA’s deepest weight class. Ciasulli will face Bucknell’s David Marble on Saturday and can place anywhere between third and sixth.
The top four place winners, plus seven wild cards will earn trips to the NCAA Championships.
The 103rd EIWA Championships will conclude on Saturday from
